In the beginning of Chapter 7 Jem is still horrified about the incident at the Radley house. School is starting again for Jem and Scout. Jem finally tells Scout about when he went back to the Radley place to get his pants. About how they were mended and folded over the fence for him. This is when they discover the ball of yarn in the tree. They had ended up finding tons of things, but Nathen Radley ended up cementing the hole closed. Scout saw Jem crying about Mr. Radley closing up the tree and didn't really understand why.
Chapter 8 was an unusual winter for Maycomb, it snowed. Jem and Scout made a snow man out of dirt. After the children had played in the snow all day, and went to sleep they were woken by Atticus because Mrs. Maudie's house had caught fire. The whole neighborhood was watching. Jem and Scout stood in front of the Radley house watching in amazment. After the fire was out, the kids went back into their house and Atticus noticed something odd. He asked Scout where she had gotten the blanket that was around her. They finally discovered that Boo Radley covered her up with the blanket while they were not paying attention.
