To Kill A Mockingbird Chapters 7 & 8

In the beginning of Chapter 7 Jem is still horrified about the incident at the Radley house. School is starting again for Jem and Scout. Jem finally tells Scout about when he went back to the Radley place to get his pants. About how they were mended and folded over the fence for him. This is when they discover the ball of yarn in the tree. They had ended up finding tons of things, but Nathen Radley ended up cementing the hole closed. Scout saw Jem crying about Mr. Radley closing up the tree and didn't really understand why.

Chapter 8 was an unusual winter for Maycomb, it snowed. Jem and Scout made a snow man out of dirt. After the children had played in the snow all day, and went to sleep they were woken by Atticus because Mrs. Maudie's house had caught fire. The whole neighborhood was watching. Jem and Scout stood in front of the Radley house watching in amazment. After the fire was out, the kids went back into their house and Atticus noticed something odd. He asked Scout where she had gotten the blanket that was around her. They finally discovered that Boo Radley covered her up with the blanket while they were not paying attention.

To Kill A Mockingbird Chapters 5 & 6

In the beginning of Chapter 5 Dill tells Scout how she is the only girl he will ever love, a bunch of childish stuff. Scout started to feel left out because the boys would only let her be in on anything if they needed her. Scout heads over to Miss Maudie's house and asks why she does what she does if she hates her house so much. She gets to the subject of Boo Radley. She was asking if he was still alive. Scout found out that Boo Radley's name is actually Arthur. Scout, Jem, and Dill attempt to give Boo a letter by pushing it through their window. It was not a very successful try, they got into trouble with Atticus for it and had to stay home.

The beginning of Chapter 6 is, Jem asking Atticus if him and Scout could go see Dill since it was his last day in Maycomb. Dill, Scout, and Jem decide to go over to the Radley place and look in the windows. They are all scared out of their minds. Jem walked up to the house and stepped on the first step and it squeaked. While Jem was looking in the window Scout saw a shadow. When Dill saw it he put his hands to his face in horror. They ran off and Jem got stuck in the fence. He was so scared he left his pants behind. They heard shots, and swiftly walked out to see what was the commotion. Nathen Radley was standing in his yard, shooting at niggers. People asked why Jem had no pants on and Dill's excuse was that they were playing strip poker. The kids were sent straight home, and straight to bed. While Scout and Jem were laying in bed, Jem decided to go get his pants that he had left behind before someone found them. Scout waited patiently for Jem to come back. When Jem got back he showed Scout his pants. They were mended where they were torn and he said they were just lying across the fence. Someone had found them and sewed them up for him.

To Kill A Mockingbird Chapters 3 & 4

In Chapter 3, Scout sees Walter Cunningham in the school yard and starts beating him up for embarrassing her in class. Jem notices Scout and Walter fighting and breaks it up. Jem knows that Walter is poor, but he doesn't shout it out for the world like Scout. Jem invites Walter over for lunch. Walter seemed to think it was charity, but Jem told him that their fathers were great friends so I couldn't be charity. When they get home and start eating their lunch, they notice some odd behavior of how Walter eats his food. Of course, Scout points out to him that that behavior is not normal. Calpurnia takes Scout out of the room and told her how wrong she was for saying that to Walter. Scout was to eat the rest of her meal alone. After lunch when Scout, Jem, and Walter get back to school Scout's teacher, Miss Caroline, found lice in a boy's hair. This was Burris Ewell, he had come from a dirty and poor family, his parents only sent him and his siblings to school on the first day to be on the class room roster. He was mean and very disrespectful toward Miss Caroline. Later that day after school, Scout comes home and insists that she doesn't ever go back to school. She thought that if the Ewell's did it then, it was OK for her to. Atticus explained to her that they were not good people to take habits from. Atticus started reading and was curious why Scout was not joining in. Scout explained to him how Miss Caroline said that he was a bad teacher and how she should not read again with him. Atticus told Scout that they could keep reading together if they kept it a secret.

Chapter 4 is explaining how her first year of school went. It is summer again and Dill Harris is about to come back again and stay with Ms. Maudie. When Scout was on her way back from school she noticed a knot whole in a tree and it contained two foil wrappers and two pieces of gum. Se examined it and took them with her. She showed Jem and he thought it was dumb of her to take gum out of a tree, when you don't know how it got there. Scout wanted to show Jem where she found this stuff so he would believe her, and they found a box with 2 Indian- head pennies. When Dill got to town he had an idea for a fun game to for them to play. He called it "Boo Radley". They would act out everything they thought went on with the Radley's.
